Tuesday (MAY 22 2007) at the Panama City Airport Authority meeting, the board made some progress on getting the new airport off the ground.

The airport plans to relocate from Panama City to the West Bay section of Panama City Beach by the end of 2009. The Board accepted $67 million in grant money at the meeting to help fund that project. This brings their total grant money to date for the project up to $110 million.

The Board also approved contracts with Kellogg, Brown and Root, the company selected to be contract and construction managers for the new airport. KBR's role in the new airport will be to schedule and budget the new construction in addition to other managerial duties. The Board itself will still maintain the rights to hire construction companies. Tuesday a task order for KBR's initial work was approved with a price tag of $4.9 million. Airport Executive Director Randy Curtis says he expects the Board will pay nearly $9 million to KBR in the coming years.

The Airport Authority is still waiting for permits from the Army Corp. of Engineers before construction can begin.

SUBJECT:
LOCAL OFFICIALS LOOK FORWARD TO ECONOMIC BOOM NEW AIRPORT WILL BRING

May 23, 2007: Approximately 25 miles east of Hammock Bay in neighboring Bay County a new international airport is getting ready to take off.
Local officials and Hammock Bay developers are looking forward to the economic boost the $331 million project, located near the Walton-Bay County line, will bring. "Because of the recent exciting announcement that construction on the new Panama City-Bay County International Airport will begin this March, and be completed and in operation by October of 2009, there has been a great deal of increased interest in this area," said Jay Odom, one of Hammock Bay's developers. "Due to our close proximity to the facility and easy access on Highway 20, the airport opens up a new frontier for Hammock Bay residents and real estate investors from all over the country," he added.
According to airport authority Executive Director Randy Curtis, the 1,300-acre airport has been in the planning phase for several years, and now the authority has received government approval to finally break ground on what he sees as a tremendous economic boost to the entire Emerald Coast region, including Walton County and the town of Freeport, which is home to Hammock Bay, in particular.
One interesting aspect of the project is that it is the first new commercial airport in the United States to be built since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Officials report that because of stringent Federal Aviation Administration guidelines put into place after the attacks, the new airport will boast some of the most advanced security technology available.
Local tourism, economic development and government officials have estimated that the airport will be a magnet for new businesses and will spur growth in the tourism and real estate industries, among others. Tourism-related businesses are particularly excited about the availability of international flight service to the region.
Four thousand acres of undeveloped land was donated by the St. Joe Company as a site for the new airport, with room for further expansion. Plans call for an 8,400-foot primary runway, 5,000-foot crosswind runway and a 100,000 square-foot state-of-the-art passenger terminal. Land near the facility has also been reserved for runway extensions, commercial/industrial space, almost 6,000 dwelling units, approximately 500 hotel rooms and even two marinas.

Panama City Beach, Florida, is projected by CNN/Money.com as the #1 Fastest Growth City in the United States (Click here to CNN.com) and is well on the way to becoming America’s next “Boom Town”. Economist Dr. Steven Cochran states that “Panama City is an economy waiting to breaking out”. Panama City property prices are still low by Florida’s standards.
Panama City Beach, located directly on the sugary beaches of the Gulf of Mexico in N.W. Florida is forecasted to appreciate 21% in 2007 and 72% over the next 5 years! It was voted as a Top 10 Family Beach Destination by USA Today and The Travel Channel. The city’s motto is “The World’s Most Beautiful Beaches” and proudly lives up to its reputation year after year.
